The Tide

two islands

Every farecard tap, aggregated by hour. Warm stations have taken more people in than they have let out; cool stations have emptied. Figures are for one average day of that type. The country turns itself inside out twice a day.

What the map is showing

The day city — where Singapore goes

Stations that take in far more people than they release. The figure is the most people ever standing in that catchment at once, on an average day of the selected type, counting only those who arrived by train and have not yet left by train.

The night city — where Singapore sleeps

The same measurement inverted: stations that empty out and stay empty until evening. These two lists are the same 193 stations, sorted from opposite ends.
